In President Hinkley’s book “Way to Be!” one of his “Be Attitudes” is Be Still. In his book he states the following advice for all of us:
“The world is so noisy. There are noises everywhere trying to influence us. We all need time to think. We need to drown out the clamor and noise and simply be quiet. We need time to ponder and meditate, and to contemplate the deeper things of life. We need time to read and to immerse ourselves in the thoughts of great minds. Our lives are so busy. We run from one thing to another. We wear ourselves out with our studies and our social lives and our pursuits of money.
Please don’t misunderstand me: I am not saying that any of these things are wrong or bad. But we are entitled to spend some time with ourselves. We need to spend time out in nature where we can think and breathe deeply and feel the earth and listen to the sounds of the ocean or the woods or the mountains.”
President Hinkley suggests that we find time do things that will bring quiet and calm to our lives, like read a good book. He suggest turning of the TV, computer, cell phone and video’s, basically unplugging from the world, to be still. He says, “Find some time to drown out the noise of the world. Take time to think about the kind of woman you want to become” or what kind of woman you are.
We must learn to “Be still and know that I am God.” (D&C 101:16) If we are not still, we will not hear the promptings of the Holy Ghost in our lives. In Revelation 3:20 it says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Will you hear the Savior’s knock?
